PURPOSE:To display the state of a device in the language of each country by specifying the necessary address of a read-only memory corresponding to the language set by a switching switch. CONSTITUTION:The read-only memory 3 has a first table 3-1 including a display code in English, a second table 3-2 including a display code in French and a third table 3-3 including a display code in German. If the state of a printer is in an error state, while it is in the state of selecting an English expression by means of the changeover switch 2, the character code corresponding to the characters of 'ERROR' of the first table 3-1 of the read-only memory 3 is read out by a command from a microprocessor 1. According to the read out character code a character pattern corresponding to the character code is outputted from a character generation means 4 and the characters are displayed on a liquid crystal panel 5.
