PURPOSE:To perform excellent automatic control of operation through simple and accurate perception of temperature, by a method wherein a pressure sensor is situated in a piping through which the constituting parts of an outdoor machine are intercoupled, and during the starting of automatic operation, an operation mode, e.g. cooling and heating, is decided by means of a pressure sensor. CONSTITUTION:During starting of automatic operation, the pressure of a coolant in stopped state is read by means of a pressure sensor 6 situated in the middle of a piping through which a 4-way valve 2 of an outdoor machine 11 is coupled to an indoor heat exchanger 5. Operation of either of cooling, heating, and soft dry is effected, based on the saturated temperature of the coolant considered as an outside air temperature. Thus, an influence by refuse and dust on the outdoor machine 11 is completely eliminated, a temperature error is reduced; uncomfortable feeling of a user produced due to erroneous selection of an opera tion mode is reduced, and durability of a product is improved through decrease of overload operation. Further, since rotation of a fan is not effected for detec tion of temperature, even slight cold air is prevented from discharge during heating and the like, and comfortableness can be improved.
