A 1,4-dioxane is produced by subjecting a one-phase liquid reaction mixture of at least one compound of the general formula: RO-(CH2CH2O)n-R (I) where n is an integer from 1 to 6 and each R is individually a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms and a dehydration catalyst to a subatmospheric pressure and an elevated temperature sufficient to prepare 1,4-dioxane, which is removed as an overhead product. The method substantially reduces foaming and formation of tars and increases productivity.
