PURPOSE:To provide a display which is nearly white in a state of impressing no voltage to a titled device and is nearly black in the state of impressing the voltage selectively thereto without being affected by a temp. change by providing a 2nd liquid crystal cell formed by sandwiching a nematic liquid crystal having nearly the same nematic-isotropic transition point as a nematic liquid crystal between a pair of polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:This display device is provided with the 2nd liquid crystal cell 2 formed by sandwiching the nematic liquid crystal having bout the same nematic-isotropic transition point as the nematic liquid crystal between a pair of the polarizing plates 1 and 10. The linearly polarized light past one of a pair of the polarizing plates 1, 10 passes the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal cell 6 for display and the liquid crystal layer of the 2nd liquid crystal cell 2 and is thereby polarized to the elliptically polarized light nearly unified in the major axis direction in the wavelength region ranging from about 400nm to about 700nm. Since the major axis directions of the elliptically polarized light are nearly unified, the shut-off of only the certain wavelength region at the time of passing another polarizing plate does not arise and the light past the polarizing plates has the color which is nearly white. |
