[Also in Division F2] A cage 16, Figs. 4 and 6, for a ball bearing comprises a ring having a number of ballreceiving holes 18 therein and having an inwardly-directed finger 20 between adjacent holes. Each finger 20 has an axial dimension which is less than the axial dimension of the ring, has arcuate opposed surfaces 24 which engage and prevent balls 14 from escaping inwardly through the holes 18, and has lugs 22 with opposed part-spherical surfaces 26 which prevent the balls from escaping outwardly. The balls are inserted into the holes 18, being forced between the surfaces 24 of the fingers 20. In another embodiment a cage 30, Figs. 9 and 12, has ball-receiving holes 34 therein; balls 36 are prevented from escaping inwardly by means of pairs of fingers such as 40A, 40B having opposed part-spherical surfaces such as 44A and 44C. The balls are prevented from escaping outwardly by means of arcuate projections 46. In a modification a cage has arcuate projections 64, Fig. 14C, and has single fingers 58. In a method of making a cage for a ball bearing, a ring is formed with a number of spaced radial holes having a diameter which is less than the balls to be received therein. Inwardly extended fingers are formed between the holes and the finger and the holes are machined by means of a cam-actuated recessing tool (not shown). The tooling process increases the size of the holes in accordance with the size of the balls to be received therein, forms ball-retaining seats on the fingers, and forms ball-restraining means. The latter may be the part-spherical surfaces 26 of the lugs 22, Fig. 4, or may be the arcuate projections 46 in flanges 38, Fig. 12. |
