PURPOSE:To permit gradation display of a display element by voltage control by partially segmenting at least either the upper and lower oriented films corresponding to one picture element constituted between transparent electrodes and forming such films of respectively discrete org. compd. films. CONSTITUTION:The electrooptic threshold characteristic of a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element varies sensitively with the kind and state of the oriented films and, therefore, the oriented film 16 corresponding to the picture element on at least either of a transparent substrate 11 or 14 is divided to plural regions 16A-16C which are respectively formed of the org. compd. films of different kinds. The regions of the different threshold voltage characteristics, consequently, exist in a plurality within one picture element and the voltage-transmission characteristics as the whole of said picture element are gentler. Gradation display by the voltage control is thereby permitted. |
