PURPOSE:To decode a high speed code string by calculating an extracted minimum value and the position of a symbol to be decoded so as to extract the symbol when the code of the content of a shift register exists as a code of a code length. CONSTITUTION:The maximum value of the code of a code length equal to a bit length of a bit string of the content of a shift register extracted by a decoding information extracting means 8 is compared with a bit string of the content of a shift register 3. Then the code of content of the shift register 3 is discriminated whether or not it exists as the code of the code length. In case of existence, the content of the shift register 3, the minimum value extracted by the means 8 and the position of the symbol to be decoded and stored in the symbol table 1 from the pointer register 7 are calculated and the symbol is extracted. Thus, it is not required to preserve the code and the operation to extract the code from the beginning and comparing it is not required. Thus, the code string is decoded at a high speed and the area storing the code is not required.
