A viscosity index improver and detergent improver for lubricating oils comprises a polymer made by reacting an olefin with a phosphorus halide in the presence of a Friedel- Crafts catalyst, hydrolysing the polymer and then reacting the acid polymer formed with an amine. Thus, 3-methylbutene-1 or 4-methylpentene-1 is reacted with phosphorus trichloride in the presence of aluminium chloride. This product is hydrolysed and reacted with tetraethylene pentamine. |
