PURPOSE:To designate the starting position and the stop position of an operation without using a projection and a detecting sensor, by controlling the start and the stop of a recording means by the output of a pattern recognition means. CONSTITUTION:When a copy button is depressed, a control circuit 27 operates a read driving circuit 31 to find graphic patterns 15 and 16. When a pattern recognition circuit 26 detects the prescribed graphic pattern 15 out of inputted picture signals, the control circuit 27 issues indication to the read driving circuit 31 to make a motor driving circuit 35 rotate a motor 34 in a reverse direction. A recording circuit 25 drives a recording magnetic head 21, and performs recording on a sheet of recording paper 20 corresponding to the inputted picture signal. Thus, reproduction and recording are performed on the sheet of recording paper by performing the main scan by the recording head 21 and subscan by a motor 23. In such a way, only by providing the prescribed graphic patterns 15 and 16 on the picture screen of a board 1, it is possible to designate the starting position and the stop position of a recording operation.
