PURPOSE:To provide an electrochromic display material which enables a multicolor display and a repeated use and which comprises a particular benzenepolycarboxylate as a main ingredient. CONSTITUTION:An electrochromic display material comprising, as a main ingredient, a compd. having an ester bond selected from among the following compds. A-D. Compd. A: an ester compd. of formula I (wherein R<1> is a group selected from among alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, and aryl; and a is an integer of 2-4). Compd. B: a polyester having a main chain structure of formulae II-III. In formula II, b is an integer of 2-4; and in formula III, R<2> is a group selected from among alkylene, cycloalkylene, and a divalent hydrocarbon group containing an aromatic ring. Compd. C: a polyallyl ester polymer derived from allyl benzenepolycarboxylate of formula IV (wherein d is an integer of 2-3). Compd. D: an allyl ester copolymer derived from diallyl phthalate and an aromatic hydrocarbon of formula V (wherein R<3> and R<4> are each H or an alkyl group; and e is an integer of 1-3).
