PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer which is very stable and can show a high electric conductivity by doping, by electrically oxidizing a polymer having a poly(dihydroisothianaphthene) structure. CONSTITUTION:A polymer having a poly(dihydroisothianaphthene) structure of the formula (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each H or a 1-5C hydrocarbon group and n is an integer) is electrochemically oxidized. As the polymer, poly(1,3- dihydroisothianaphthene) is particularly desirable. The degree of polymerization n is generally 10 or above, and preferably 500 or above, though it depends on the kind of the monomer or polymerization conditions. The electrochemical polymerization of the polymer can be performed by dissolving a polymer having, for example, a poly(dihydroisothianaphthene) structure in a solvent containing an electrolyte and applying a voltage to the solution or by immersing the poly mer in an electrolyte and applying a voltage to it.
