[Also in Division B6] Metal bottles are profiled without the use of internal formers by rotating the bottle about its axis in contact with a profiling tool comprising a mandrel carrying on its outside a cutting edge in the form of an open spiral. The cutting edge is formed by cutting into a blank corresponding in shape to the negative profile of the required bottle profile. The profiling tool is displaced into cutting contact with the bottle in such a way that the axis of the cutting edge remains parallel to that of the bottle, the point of contact with the bottle simultaneously advancing along the generatrices of the bottle and the tangent of the cutting edge at this point of contact being inclined at an acute angle to the axis of the tool. As shown in Fig. 1 apparatus comprises a drum H supporting at least one assembly consisting of a rotary chuck B and a coaxial spring-loaded tailstock C which co-operates with the chuck B to support a bottle A, the rotary chuck being driven by a motor or reduction gear (Fig. 8, not shown) so as to rotate bottle A about its axis. Profiling tool E comprises a mandrel provided on its outside with a cutting edge E1 and is carried by a supporting slide D provided with a feed-and-return means G comprising a cam, a jack and a drive motor capable of bringing the tool into and out of operative contact with a bottle whilst maintaining the axis of the tool parallel with that of the bottle. The tip of the edge E1 is situated on an imaginary surface of revolution representing the negative of the profile which is to be given to the bottles. The edge E1 is rotated by a motor with a reduction gear (Fig. 7, not shown) at a speed lower than that at which the bottle is rotated. The apparatus illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) comprises a drum carrying four chucks arranged regularly around a common circumference whereby a shaped bottle may be placed by a new bottle to be shaped whilst the tool is acting on another bottle. |
