PURPOSE:To surely detect paper even if it is transparent and with a format printed, by constituting a paper detecting sensor of a printer of a contact piece, which hangs down by dead weight, and a fixed contact plate, connected to the earth, and conveying the paper to be placed between the contact piece and the fixed contact plate. CONSTITUTION:A printer forms one part of its paper sensor by a contact terminal 2, which hangs by its dead weight, and the other part of the paper sensor by a fixed contact plate 1 connected to the earth. The contact terminal 2, which turns around a lead bar 3, is prevented from the lateral displacement by a stopper 4. The contact plate 1, contact terminal 2 and the lead bar 3 are constituted of metal. The paper sensor is turned on, unless paper is placed between the contact plate 1 and the contact piece 2, but turned off if the paper is inserted. In this way, the printer surely detects existence of the paper even if it is a transparent OHP film and paper printing a format.
