PURPOSE:To form a roll, etc., for rolling a dull steel sheet provided with a roughened surface, having high wear resistance and a stabilized roughness value, and capable of rolling for a long time, by projecting an electron beam (EB) and then an ion beam (IB) on the surface of the roll, etc., in a vacuum to reform the surface layer part of the rugged surface. CONSTITUTION:The roll 10 to be worked is continuously rotated in a vessel 20 kept at a specified vacuum, the surface of the roll 10 is heated and melted by EB, and a part of the roll is evaporated. Consequently, the extruded melt is deposited on the bottom 13 of a hole and the outside of the hole, and a protrusion 12 is formed. The protrusion 12 is transferred to a steel sheet during rolling, hence a recess is formed on the steel sheet, and the steel sheet surface is roughened. After the boring by EB, the ions of N2, Cr, etc., are implanted in the surface layer of the roll 10 by IB to form an ion-implanted part 14 on the surface layer, and the surface hardness is increased. When the roll 10 is rotated to an angle of 360 deg. by the rotation of the roll 10 and a control part 50 for EB and IB, a roll driving part 30 and an EB-IB driving part 40 are operated to move the roll 10 to a specified width in the lengthwise direction. |
