PURPOSE:To provide the titled alloy suitable as raw material for target material in a vacuum vapor deposition method even if prepared by air melting, by specifying respective contents of C, Si, Mn, Al, and O2 in an alloy containing 15-25wt.% Ni and having the balance Co. CONSTITUTION:This alloy has a composition consisting of, by weight, 15-25% Ni, <=0.005% C, 0.01-0.05% Si, 0.01-0.50% Mn, 0.001-0.1% Al, <=500ppm O2, and the balance Co. Although prepared by air melting, this alloy is reduced in the quantity of gas generated owing to the deoxidizing actions of Si and Al, and further, by the control mainly of O2 and C, a bumping phenomenon can be prevented in this alloy. Moreover, this alloy has superior magnetic properties. Accordingly, an air-melted Co-base alloy for magnetic recording medium suitable for alloy target material can be obtained.
