1,138,857. Rolling; continuous casting. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 29 March, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 13885/66. Headings B3F and B3M. A rolling mill comprises four abutting rolls 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d each having a primary shaft 15a, 15b, 15c, 15d extending from one side and mounted in a chock l9a, l9b, 19c, 19d, respectively, and a secondary shaft 17a, 17b, 17c, 17d supported by the chock 19b, 19c, 19d, 19a of an adjacent roll. The shafts are restrained in the chocks 19a, 19b, 19c, 19d by removable capping means (25), Fig. 2 and 3 (not shown). The primary shafts 15a, 15b, 15c, 15d are mounted in friction or anti-friction bearings 23a, 23b, 23c, 23d in the chocks to allow free rolling of the rolls. The rolls are preferably independently driven by synchronized motors but since the rolls frictionally engage each other they may be driven from a single drive. Two nests of rolls 30, 40 may be arranged in tandem to draw a hot ingot direct from a continuous casting mould 35 in order to reduce it in two successive stages. If desired, further nests may be positioned to accomplish further reduction. The rolls may be altered to change the shape of the pass, e.g. circular or hexagonal. |
