Applies to a welding backup tape containing a carbon scavenger such as a metal oxide, a salt of an oxy-acid, an alkali or alkaline earth metal fluoride which serves to minimize carbon pickup in the weld thus reducing the tendency of welds particularly those formed in stainless steel to corrode. Comprises an elongated flexible heat resistant backing having a face coated with an adhesive, the improvement, which comprises a finely divided scavenger for carbon on the tape whereby carbonization of the weld metal during welding due to release of carbon from the tape is minimized. |
