PURPOSE:To shorten a recognition processing time by projecting many slit beams all at once for a picture processing job, obtaining information needed for recognition of an object through two image pickup operations and attaining the labeling jobs of each slit image. CONSTITUTION:Plural plate-shaped slit beams 6 of are projected onto a 3-dimensional object 5 to be recognized from a multi-slit light source 1 for generation of a cross beam 7 of those beams 6 on the surface of the object 5. A slit beam modulation part 2 controls the energy projected within one-frame period to a set level for each beam 6. The energy to be radiated on each beam 6 is set twice. Then a picture including a source slit image is sent to a picture processor 4 via a TV camera 3. The relation between two set energy levels is compared with the relation of brightness among the slit images. Then each slit image is labeled.
