A decorated resin-impregnated foil (that is, a thin sheet of paper or fabric impregnated with a thermosetting resin or a long fibered, well matted, cellulose with a high alpha content bound with a poly-condensation resin) is formed and, after its free ends have been joined and it has been heated to bring its resin to a similar state of condensation to that of a plastic blank of the article to be decorated, it is applied to the surface of the blank in a mould and bonded to it by means of heat and pressure which effect cross-linking between the resin of the blank and that of the foil. Where the article to be decorated is formed in a mould, the same mould may be used for bonding the foil to the article. The foil may be applied while both the article and the resin of the foil are in an incomplete state of condensation. The free ends of the foil overlap and are joined by partial cross-linking of the resin in the foil under heat or by using a resin binder. Alternatively, the free ends may have corresponding hooks and slits and be joined mechanically. The process is described with reference to the decoration of cups and ashtrays.
|
