PURPOSE:To obtain an easily handleable electrolytic soln. for electropolishing by which smooth polished surfaces having fine surface lsuter are formed on Zr and Zr alloys, by adding oxalic acid, citric acid, gluconic acid or a salt thereof to an electrolytic soln. contg. fluoride at a proper concn. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic soln. for electropolishing Zr and Zr alloy is obtd. by adding 0.2-5mol/l fluoride and 0.01-3mol/l one or more kinds of compds. selected among org. acids such as oxalic acid, citric acid and gluconic acid and salts of the acids. The pH of the electrolytic soln. is preferably adjusted to 3-10. When Zr and Zr alloys are electropolished with the electrolytic soln., smooth polished surface free from pits are formed without causing severe corrosion under conditions during natural immersion.
