摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain the titled tool having superior wear and chipping resistances and a long service life, by forming the hard surface layer of a surface coated cutting tool with an inner layer of Ti carbide or the like producing the highest peak of X-ray diffraction on a specified face and an outer layer of kappa-aluminum oxide. CONSTITUTION:An inner layer made of a single layer of Ti carbide, carbonitride or oxycarbonitride producing the highest peak of X-ray diffraction on the (220) face or composed of plural layers of two or more kinds of such compds. is formed on the surface of a WC-base sintered hard alloy or TiCN-base cermet as a base material with a conventional chemical vapor deposition device. An outer layer of kappa-aluminum oxide or a mixture of kappa-aluminum oxide with alpha-aluminum oxide is then formed on the inner layer with the device. When each of the layers is formed, the pressure and temp. of the atmosphere and the compsn. of reactive gas are properly regulated.
