PURPOSE:To improve polarizing characteristic and transparency of polarizing film by using a combination of a specified thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester with a dichroic dye. CONSTITUTION:The polyester having thermotropic liquid crystal characteristic to be used for the prepn. of polarizing film is one comprising a copolymeric polyester consisting of (A) hydroquinone deriv. component, (B) terephthalic acid component, isophthalic acid component, and (D) p-hydroxy benzoic acid component, wherein the ratio of the component (A) to the component (D) is 5:95-70:30 expressed in terms of mol.%, and the ratio of the component (B) to the component (C) is 50:50-100:0 expressed in terms of mol.%. This polyester easily provides polarizing filter exhibiting high orientation characteristic by a simple process comprising a melt film forming process and blending a dichroic dye in the stage of forming film. By this process, superior film having high transparency and high polarizing characteristic is provided.
