PURPOSE:To easily obtain a transparent polygonal glass fiber having smooth surface, by pouring a molten glass into a polygonal slit formed on dividing faces of a mold splittable into two halves and drawing and forming the resultant seed rod at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:A glass 1 is put into a crucible 2, melted with heat and poured into a polygonal slit 4 formed on dividing faces of a mold 3 splittable into two halves. A seed rod 5 having a thickness of 5-20 times the thickness of the final product is produced by this process. The seed rod is heated at a temperature higher than the softening point of the glass by 100-150 deg.C, drawn and formed to obtain a square fiber 6. A transparent square fiber 6 having smooth surface and free from surface degradation can be produced by this process. The square fiber 6 can be suitable used as a glass for sealing gap of magnetic head, etc. |
