PURPOSE:To attain an excellent gradational display having sharp resolution by forming a potential gradient in the surface of a resistance layer which constitutes a picture element and applying a gradation signal which is modulated by a voltage value, pulse width, or the number of pulse as an input signal. CONSTITUTION:The potential gradient is given in the surface of the resistance layer 12 by a scanning signal applied to a transmission electrode 13 to give a potential difference gradient to an electric field between the layer and a counter electrode 14. At this time, the voltage value, pulse width, or the number of pulses of a voltage signal applied to the counter electrode 14 may be modulated according to gradation information to control the gradations. Then when gradations are obtained by the potential gradient, an orientating process is carried out so that respective layers are arrayed in a direction where an inversion area 86 expands according to the gradations. Namely, the array direction 83 (normal of molecule layer 82) of the molecule layer 82 of smectic liquid crystal is set almost orthogonally to the transmission electrode 13. Consequently, high resolution and excellent gradations are obtained. |
