The invention relates to a binder and plasticizer for refractory, carbon-containing, anhydrous, tar-containing ceramic compositions, which is made up of surface-active compounds and/or alicyclic hydrocarbons and/or derivatives thereof. Cationic, anionic and/or nonionic surfactants and also terpenoid hydrocarbons and also natural and processing products containing these and derivatives thereof such as alkylene oxide adducts can be used. The binder/plasticizer enables the customary tar content of ceramic compositions such as, for example, tap hole compositions to be substantially reduced while maintaining the required technological properties. This greatly reduces the liberation of ring compounds arising from the tar content which are environmentally polluting and harmful to health.
