PURPOSE:To efficiently remove organic substance in raw water, by using alpha-type manganese dioxide, which is subjected to heat treatment in the persence of a mineral acid, as a filter medium for purifying water. CONSTITUTION:A pulverized alpha-type managanese dioxide, which is obtained by electrolyzing the mixture of manganese sulfate, potassium sulfate and sulfuric acid or treating dimanganese trioxide in the presence of sulfuric acid and ammonium, is used as a raw material for filter medium for purifying water. The surface of alpha-type manganese dioxide is activated by the heat-treatment in the presence of a mineral acid. Because the surface of the activated alpha-type manganese dioxide which is obtained by the treatment is whiskered, the surface of said manganese dioxide is large, and then said manganese when it is used as the filer medium for purifying water.
