Enzyme controlled release system and prepared reactant by which an identifiable molecule may be released on demand through the action of an active enzyme. The controlled release system is useful for detection of an analyte of interest present in a test sample in picogram per liter quantities and may be employed in a variety of different modes of use including immunoassays, enzyme amplification systems and the release of pharmacologically active ligands.
