<p>An object having fluorescent material, e.g., a sized portion of continuous paper (21B) being conveyed, is irradiated with ultraviolet rays from an ultraviolet-ray source (1), and the fluorescence from the fluorescent material is detected by at least two photodetectors (2). The output value of each photodetector is processed by a control computer in the apparatus (10) and is compared with a reference value stored in a memory to determine whether the sizing is acceptable or not and to determine the degree of sizing. When it is determined that the sizing is defective, an alarm buzzer (15) is energized and a lamp (19) emits light. The method and apparatus can be utilized for the inspection of sized portions in the sizing steps involved in a gathering machine, a box making machine, a bookbinding machine, and like machines.</p> |
