PURPOSE:To ensure the decision on the contention between long-distance and short-distance objects by selecting either of right and left distance measuring areas if the difference between extents of defocusing is larger than a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:Arrays of original data corresponding to divided distance measuring areas are defined as blocks I-III; and if an object exists in the central distance measuring area, distance measurement is possible by the block II and the central object is always preferably focused. If the object does not exist in the central distance measuring area but exists in the right or left distance measuring area, the object of the block I or III whose extent of defocusing is maximum in consideration of the direction is selected. If two objects different in distance exist together in the block II, the decision on the contention between long-distance and short-distance objects is performed, and either of right and left blocks I and III is selected if the difference of distance measured results between right and left blocks I and III is large, but the central block II is selected if this difference is not large. Thus, the decision on the contention between long-distance and short-distance objects is not affected by the object luminance, the contrast, or the like is ensured. |
