A pattern selecting means for a circular knitting machine comprises a single bank of slidable patterning blades (6) each having a first cam surface (28) operable at a given level in the bank, an associated bank of pivotal members (32) mounted about an axis (34) and formed with second cam surfaces (30), and respective rotary members (36) pivotal about an axis (38), each rotary member (36) having a contoured camming surface (A-F) adapted to contact a contact edge (V-Z) of said pivotal member (32) and an e.g. toothed surface (40) adapted to engage with the blade (6), whereby sliding movement of the blade (6) brings about rotation of, the rotary member (36), the camming surface (A-F) thereof pivoting the pivotal member (32) to extend or retract the second cam surface (30), a first movement of the blade (6) causes the second surface (30) to become operative as shown for a tuck selection while a second movement bring the first surface (28) also into action, the pivotal member (32) being unaffected, for a miss selection. <IMAGE>
