To reduce and neutralise salt of hypochlorous acid dissolved in a liquid, in particular for removing sodium hypochlorite NaOCl from the absorption liquid which has become unusable in the chlorine gas absorption process, according to the invention formic acid HCOOH is used as reducing agent. After the reduction and subsequent neutralisation, the liquid only contains nontoxic substances which can be introduced harmlessly into the public waste water system, such as chloride (e.g. NaCl), carbonates and carbon dioxide and not sodium sulphate, Na2SO4, which would form if the frequently conventional reducing agent sodium hydrogen sulphite NaHSO3 were used. The invention is of importance, inter alia, in connection with the exhaust gas purification in the production of optical waveguide preforms. <IMAGE>
