A combination of apparatuses for electrophoretically separating, visualizing and photographing DNA fragments in agarose gels, the combination includes an electrophoretic chamber (12) having a platform (32) and an electrode (36) located on each side of the platform (32); a transilluminator (1) having a UV light source (15), a frame (22) defining a viewing opening over the light source (15), and a UV filtering cover (24) for enclosing the viewing opening; a tray (14) having movable gates (60) for defining an enclosure for the agarose gel in a first position and for locating the tray (14) on the platform (32) in the electrophoresis chamber (12) in a second position; and a camera assembly (16) adapted to be mounted on the frame (22) in the transilluminator (10) for providing 1:1 magnification photographs of the DNA fragment migration patterns.
