<p>Apparatus and methods for treating specimens of cells to carry out, automatically, the screening of cells to determine the presence of abnormal cells labelled using the methods and apparatus disclosed. In the apparatus the specimen of cells is fixed to a specimen support (2) which is then passed through a sequence of treatment chambers (3, 4, 5, 6), irradiated and the resultant signal read by a detector (9) connected to an analyser (10). The methods involve the pretreatment, with a chromophore, of the specimen of cells before the fluorescent label, which binds to the abnormal cells, is added. Novel fluorescent compounds (streptavidin bound to an acridinium compound) for labelling abnormal cells are also disclosed.</p> |
