In the case of a restraining device for motor vehicles with an airbag and an acceleration sensor with two acceleration levels, which controls the activation of the airbag, the vehicle occupant is also provided with a seat belt and the airbag is fully activated once the single determining acceleration level is attained. This acceleration level is low with the seat belt not fastened and high with the seat belt fastened. In this way the airbag is only activated when this is absolutely essential. This in turn depends on how high the acceleration level is and whether the seat belt is fastened.
