PURPOSE:To improve the pass stability of a strip in a roll cooling zone and averaging treatment zone to be provided after a cooling zone by specifically bisecting gas ejection headers of a gas cooler of the cooling zone in the transverse direction of the strip and controlling the rates of the gases to be supplied to the respective headers in accordance with the temp. distribution of the strip. CONSTITUTION:For example, the gas ejection headers 2a, 2b are provided by 15 stages each (#1-#15) on both faces of the strip 1 along the traveling direction thereof and are respectively bisected in the transverse direction (designated as D) of the strip 1. These heads are disposed zigzag around the center of the strip 1 by changing the dividing positions thereof for each of the headers 2a, 2b. The cooling gases are respectively supplied by right and left side gas supplying deices 3, 4 to all the headers existing on the right and left sides of the dividing positions of the headers 2a, 2b. The strip temp. in the direction D on the right side of the cooler is measured by a temp. measuring instrument 5 and the rates of the cooling gases to be supplied to the headers 2a, 2b are determined by a control device 6 in accordance with the measured strip temp. profile.
