PURPOSE:To simplify a host system side by providing a period changing means, which makes the driving means of a stepping motor output a step pulse, the period of which is changed according to a medium identify signal, inputted to an interface connector. CONSTITUTION:The period changing means 8 changes the period of the step pulse (a), inputted to the interface connector 1, according to the medium identify signal, which appears at a pin (b), and makes the driving means 3 to drive the stepping motor output the said step pulse. Thus, because the position control of a magnetic head can be performed from a host computer side on the basis of some kind of the step pulse, for a different kind of a recording medium, it is no need to make the host system side prepare a different system for the different kind of the recording medium, and it can be simplified.
