In a fluid switching device, a channel B, containing an anode grid A connected to the positive pole of voltage source V, has a constriction F containing cathode plates K1, K2 that can be connected through a switch S to the negative pole of the source V, and outlet channels C1, C2. An electrolytic liquid flows through the channel B and through one of the outlet channels until closure of the switch S connects the anode with (say) the cathode K1, the resulting electrolytic action causing gas to form at K1 and producing a hindering pressure that ensures that the flow is through the channel C2. The flow is maintained through the channel C2 even when the switch S is disengaged. Activation of the other cathode K2 switches the flow to the channel C1. For sulphuric acid the switching can take place in about 10 milliseconds. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), anodes (A1), (A2) are also contained within the constriction F so that the additional gas pressure at the anodes can be utilized with a corresponding reduction in switching time. Further modifications are proposed in which anodes A3, A4 are contained in the outlet channels C1, C2, so that switching of fluid flow automatically cuts off the current; in which the switched fluid stream can be used as an electric switch by making or breaking contacts between further electrodes placed in the outlet channels; and in which there are an arbitary number of outlet channels.</p> |
