PURPOSE:To obtain a polyformal resin excellent in heat resistance and optical properties, by reacting a specified bisphenol with a methylene halide. CONSTITUTION:A bisphenol of formula I is reacted with a methylene halide to obtain a polyformal resin having repeating units of formula II and an intrinsic viscosity >=0.2dl/g in a methylene chloride solution at 20 deg.C. In the formula, R<1> and R<2> are each H, a 1-5C alkyl, a 6-12C aryl, a 7-11C alkoxyphenyl or phenoxyphenyl, R<1> and R<2> may be 2-5C alkylenes which are combined to form a ring. Examples of the compounds of formula I include bis(3-phenyl-4- hydroxyphenyl)methane and 1,1-bis(3-phenyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propane.
