PURPOSE:To make a ribbon have a long service life and be capable of being repeatedly used, by separating an ink layer and a resistive ribbon serving as a heat generating source for the ink layer from each other, providing a reinforcing member for the ribbon, and shaping the ribbon in a loop form. CONSTITUTION:A conductive base layer is removed from a conventional ink ribbon to obtain a resistive ribbon 1. Reinforcing members, for example, polyethylene terephthalate films, metallic sheets or amorphous metallic ribbons 2 are adhered to one side of the resistive ribbon 1. The resistive ribbon 1 with the reinforcing members 2 on the inner side is shaped in a loop form, and is so mounted that it is moved around an electrothermal head. Therefore, the reinforcing members 2 are adhered at such positions that the head can be opposed exactly to and brought into contact with the resistive ribbon 1, namely, the members 2 are adhered respectively to the upper and lower edges of the ribbon 1. The head supplies currents to the ribbon 1 to generate heat, by which an ink in a separated ink layer is melted, and the melted ink is adhered to a printing paper, thereby printing paper being printed.
