PURPOSE:To permit continuous production of an electrochromic display device by forming a coloring active material layer of a film consisting of a high- polymer resin having an independent EC function group and ion donative and receptive groups. CONSTITUTION:A display electrode 8, the coloring active material layer 9, a counter electrode 10, and a counter substrate 11 are successively laminated on a transparent substrate 7. The coloring active material layer 9 is the electrochromic function film consisting of the film-formable high-polymer resin having a pi bond and ion exchange group. Since the danger of liquid leakage is thereby prevented, a preservable life is long and easy thickness reduction is permitted; in addition, generation of uneven color formation is obviated. The cell is easy to prepare and the adhesiveness to the substrates is good as sealing 12 is simple or no sealing is required. The display device is hardly affected by ambient environment, more particularly humidity and has high environmental resistance. Since continuous production of the device is possible, the productivity is high and the production cost is reduced.
