PURPOSE:To prevent the contamination of the title fiber with the moisture and other impurities absorbed from the working atmosphere and variations in the outer diameter of the fiber by carrying out the heating, melting, and drawing into a fiber of a heavy metal fluoride glass base material in a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:The heavy metal fluoride glass base material 1 such as ZrF4 and BaF2 is heated by a heater 3 in the heating furnace 2 in a vacuum vessel 8, melted, drawn into fiber 4, and then wound on a drum 6 through a capstan 5. Since the glass base material 1 is drawn in a vacuum, the fiber 4 is quenched by the atmospheric gas, the viscosity is increased, the variations in the fiber diameter are prevented, and the contamination of the glass fiber 4 with the moisture and impurities absorbed from the atmospheric gas is eliminated, and the high-purity optical fiber 4 having uniform diameter can be produced. |
