PURPOSE:To automatically measure the thickness of a painted film of a color steel plate, by rotating a roll having a transparent part for measuring the thickness of painted films in contact with the surface of a roll edge section to determine the painted film thickness of a paint transferred on the roll by light transmission. CONSTITUTION:A paint 7 is transferred onto the surface of a steel strip 6 with a coating roll 3 to paint while the paint is applied on a transparent roll 5 for measuring the thickness of a painted film rotating in contact with a roll edge not involved in the painting of the coating roll 3. On the other hand, infrared visible rays always emitted to a roll 5 for transparency from a luminous body 9 are transmitted through a painted film 5'-1 transferred onto the coating roll and a transparent part 5-1 when facing the transparent part 5-1 to be incident into the transparent roll, refracts at the right angle with a reflector 8 provided in the roll and transmitted through the painted film 5'-1 through the other transparent part 5-1 to measure the rays with a photodetector 12.
