PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the titled compound, by oxidizing naphthalene in a liquid phase into 1,4-naphthoquinone by the use of an acidic aqueous solution containing a ceric ion under ultrasonic irradiation and subjecting 1,4- naphthoquinone and 1,3-butadiene to Diels-Alder reaction. CONSTITUTION:(i) Naphthalene 26 is oxidized 4 in a liquid phase by the use of an acidic aqueous solution containing a ceric ion under ultrasonic irradiation and (ii) the prepared reaction mixture 18 is separated 9 into crystal 19 containing 1,4-naphthoquinone and the acidic aqueous solution 20 containing a cerium ion. Then (iii) the prepared crystal 19 is subjected to Diels-Alder reaction 7 with 1,3-butadiene, crystal 27 containing the titled compound is crystallized and separated. (iv) A cerous ion in the aqueous solution 20 is electrically oxidized 2 into the ceric ion and returned 17 to the process (i) to give the titled compound 28 useful as an intermediate for anthraquinone dye, etc., in high purity, in high yield and high selectively without requiring complicated processes.
