Acyl isocyanates of formula in which X is a halogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl, aryl, aryloxy, or saturated or unsaturated monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonyloxy radical, are prepared by reacting, at a temperature of 10‹ to 150‹ C., an isocyanide dichloride of formula with an anhydrous strong acid which contains dissociable hydrogen atoms attached to oxygen atoms and has a pKa value up to 2, optionally in the presence of an inert solvent. Chlorocarbonyl isocyanate is claimed per se. Specified acids which may be used in the process are fluoro-, chloro-, methane-, benzene- and toluenesulphonic acids, trichloro- and trifluoro-acetic acids and dichloro-phosphoric acid. Specified values for X are chlorine, methyl, ethyl, bromomethyl, trifluoromethyl, benzyl, 4-nitrobenzyl, 4-chlorobenzyl, phenyl, 2-, 3- and 4-nitrophenyl, 2-, 3- and 4-chlorophenyl, 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-dichlorophenyl, 2- and 4-methylphenyl, methoxyphenyl, methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy and 2- chloroethoxy. The acyl isocyanates may be used as pesticides and as dehydrating agents in special syntheses. |
