The evaporator comprises at least one multi-passage unit of plate- like configuration constructed of a thermally conductive material and having a predetermined thickness. The multi-passage unit has portions to define a number of refrigerant flow passages in parallel relation with one another, the flow passages being open at opposite ends of the muti-passage unit. An inlet header distributes refrigerant into the flow passages, the header being connected to one of the opposite ends of the multi-passage unit and having a supply passage through which refrigerant is passed. An outlet header collects and discharges the refrigerant flowing out of the passages, is connected to the other end of the mutipassage unit and has a passage through which the refrigerant is discharged and to which the flow passages are open at the other end.
