PURPOSE:To make it possible to freely regulate the diameter of the smallest part of each front side larger hole by forming a specified photoresist layer on each exposed part of a photoresist layer on the front side of a thin metallic sheet for a shadow mask and by carrying out etching. CONSTITUTION:A photoresist layer 3 is formed on each dot-shaped exposed part 2 of a photoresist layer 1 formed on the front side of a thin steel sheet for a shadow mask so as to reduce the area of the part 2 without practically changing the shape. By the reduction of the area, the extent of front side etching is controlled so that the diameter d2 of the smallest part of each hole 4 is freely regulated. The diameter or width of the dot- or slot-shaped photoresist layer 3 is 0.01mm-1.5Xd2mm.
