PURPOSE:To produce 2-amino-2-(1,4-cyclohexadienyl)acetic acid or an ester thereof at a low cost by electrolytically reducing phenylglycine or an ester thereof in an amine soln. in the presence of an alkali metallic salt. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic soln. is composed of an alkali metallic salt such as LiCl, NaCl, Li2SO4 or Na2SO4 as a supporting electrolyte and an aliphat. mono- or diamine or other amine such as methylamine, ethylamine or hexamethylenediamine as a solvent, and 0.1-10wt.% phenylglycine or alkyl ester thereof is added to the electrolytic soln. This electrolytic soln. is poured into an electrolytic cell provided with an a porous porcelain pottery diaphragm, an asbestos fiber diaphragm, an ion exchange membrane or the like and electrodes of Pt, Ir, Rh or the like as the anode and cathode. While the electrolytic soln. is stirred at 5-40 deg.C, electrolytic reduction is carried out at 0.1-100A/dm<2> current density. 2-Amino-2-(1,4-cycloexadienyl)acetic acid or an alkyl ester thereof is easily produced.
