PURPOSE:To permit the stable operation by arranging a vane wheel at the position higher than the min. water level of a vertical shaft pump and opening a suction passage communicating to a suction valve in the vicinity of the inlet of the vane wheel. CONSTITUTION:The vane wheel 1 of a vertical shaft pump is arranged at the position higher than the min. water level LWL, and a suction bell-mouth 3 is connected with a lower side casing 22 through a connecting cylinder 7. A suction passage 8 having a suction valve 10 is inserted inside the pump from the suction port of the suction bell-mouth 3, and the top edge is opened in the vicinity of the inlet of the vane wheel 1. Therefore, when the water level becomes below the set inlet level of the vane wheel, switching to the air operation is permitted by introducing air into the pump, and the stable operation can be realized at any water level.
