In a fuel injection pump with a piston (4) capable of reciprocating movement in a pump body and a control sleeve (17) fitted so that it is capable of sliding on the piston (4) with overflow opening (21) formed in the said sleeve, an especially rapid pressure drop is obtained at the end of the injection cycle, thereby considerably reducing the pollutant emissions in the exhaust gas, in that the overflow opening (21) is of especially large dimensions and in any event, has a larger flow cross-section, especially a larger diameter, than the fuel passage (23). <IMAGE>
