The mowing of grass verges on roads and motorways is carried out by grass-verge mowers which can be used only to a limited extent or not at all in the region where trees, traffic signs and the like are standing. In known swing-back grass-verge mowers, very sharp contact occurs between the grass-verge mower and the obstacle, and this can lead to the destruction of the obstacle and restricts the operating speed of the grass-verge mower. There is proposed a grass-verge mower which, by means of an actuating device, ensures that, in the event of contact with an obstacle, the actual mowing unit is positively retracted and, after it is clear of the obstacle, is displaced forwards again positively, so that damage to the obstacles can no longer occur and the swing-out and swing-in movement of the mowing unit takes place very quickly, if appropriate in dependence on the driving speed of the vehicle or of the mowing unit.
